THE PAN-API FESTIVAL MARCH 25-30, 2013

Schools, businesses, and community organizations created and posted their own pan-API activity/event on the Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives calendar!

  • Organized their own special events around pan-API ethnicity to occur during the celebration, for example, film screening, performance, panel discussion, or workshop.
  • Submitted pieces to this online Zine, for example, writing, photos, art, poetry, music.
  • Created art installations in theirr own spaces, for example, place of business, classroom, school.
  • Listing their pan-API business/service in the online Zine.

Our goals for the festival were to draw attention to the ongoing goals of A.P.A.S.A:

  • Create spaces for participants to tell their stories about what it means to be Asian, Asian American, South Asian, and Pacific Islanders in their own voices, and engage in dialogue with those who do not identify as such about their perspectives too of what “Asian” means.
  • Increase awareness and appreciation of the diversity that exists within our group and work in solidarity to engage our differences.
  • Form alliances with other groups and in the local community.

“Who are ‘Asian Pacific Islanders’? What does being ‘Asian’ or ‘Asian Pacific Islander’ mean? Who are our communities of Asian Pacific Islanders, and what are our resources here in Humboldt? What are our different experiences & stories?”

The Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives weeklong event occurred March 25-30, 2013, and was sponsored by the HSU Asian Pacific Islander American Student Alliance (A.P.A.S.A.) will gather together, on one common calendar, different events around pan-Asian Pacific Islander (pan-API) ethnicity happening both on- and off-campus events, and share pan-API resources in Humboldt. Performances, workshops, movies, lectures, art showings, classes, or resources like stores or community services.

The community calendar and Zine continue on after the festival. Please contribute and list your resource/service or your event, by contacting A.P.A.S.A at apasa@humboldt.edu

We are extending the invitation to the community at large as well as the HSU community to encourage collaboration between the on and off-campus community. Humboldt County can sometimes feel less welcoming to residents and students of color, and not necessarily very cognizant of our community. We invite you to join us in recognizing the diverse experiences of Asians, Asian Americans, South Asians, and Pacific Islanders in Humboldt.
